Ineffective Clients are a "Diem" a dozen

Whether it's the Middle East or the Far East, it's good to know that the times may change, but America's abilities to out-bully others remains as unchanging as ever.
Dianne Feinstein, the chair of the Senate intelligence committee, told a hearing on Wednesday that Maliki's government "has got to go if you want any reconciliation", and Republican John McCain called for the use of US air power but also urged Obama to "make very clear to Maliki that his time is up".
Because the greatest way to undermine the fiction of a democratic Iraq is for another country to tell 'em to ditch their leadership.

Especially when bombs and American soldiers have been involved. After all, this could get messy.

And what a look that is, after our other fiction, being the "good guys". [cross-posted at Firedoglake]

"First as tragedy, then as farce..."

Sorry to quote the-mostest-worstest-evilest-meanie-ist-atheist-commie of them all, but it seems appropriate.

This is the John McCain who proclaimed ISIS poses an "existential threat to the United States."

Think about how stupid that statement is for a moment.

Ah, the right wing of this country (i.e., most of the foreign policy establishment) has had regime change as its foremost principle for decades. Why would they change now?

One need only think back to the first Gulf war, when they were all egging the elder Bush to push on to Baghdad and topple Hussein, even though there was no UN mandate to do so (in fact, international law forbids military incursion for purposes of regime change), and Bush's coalition would have dissolved had he done so.

The tendency probably goes as far back as the very end of WWII, when Patton, the moment one war was over, wanted to start another one with the Soviets.

Simply, there are people in this country who think that war solves all problems, even though it creates many more, more often than not. Unfortunately, McCain and his ilk have dominated the discussion for a long time, and they aren't going away any time soon.

reminds me of Georgie pushing for Palestinian elections and then got Hamas... “On the other hand, I don’t see how you can be a partner in peace if you advocate the destruction of a country as part of your platform. And I know you can’t be a partner in peace if you have a — if your party has got an armed wing.” boo-hoo wahhh. we fuck around w/things and the bitch about the end result. I wonder if we'll ever learn?
